THIS issue has many interesting news from processing and packaging companies. One that stands out is the case study shared by The Bühler Group on its role in helping Spanish olive processor Grupo Elayo develop a new healthy ingredient out of olive seeds. What an ingenious and enterprising way to use up by-products. Does it take genius to turn something like seeds into a new ingredient? Like any inventor or food scientist knows, it takes more than a brilliant idea, of course. But one thing that needs no high IQ, but just plain common sense - and serious concern for the environment - is taking part in the recycling of packaging. To know what's going on in this sector, we talked to Tetra Pak’s Jeff Fielkow, Cluster Leader Environment for South Asia, East Asia & Oceania, on the company’s recycling efforts in Asia. Also for this issue, we interviewed Martial Beck, the Director of Business Development for Eau De Coco, a producer of coconut water and coconut meat in the Ph

New books on food technology

The world's food requirements are increasing as the population grows. What does this mean? Self-sufficiency in agricultural production will be a major thrust worldwide and it will require more efficient and effective approaches to utilization of available farm production. Furthermore, climate change and environmental pollution are impacting the availability of safe food. It becomes imperative, especially among Asian countries, to become highly competitive in food production and manufacturing. Food processing activities, which extend proper utilization of agricultural production, is best done with the services of food technologists.  And in this era of globalization, food products stand a better chance in the national and international markets if backed by recent developments in sound science and technology.
