A tour of F&B factories in Chiang Mai, Thailand

CHIANG MAI’s food manufacturing industry combines tradition, technology, and sustainability, positioning the province as a cornerstone in Thailand’s food innovation ecosystem. The food industry’s competitive edge stems from a convergence of geographic, institutional, and innovation-driven strengths. It is contributing to the country’s ambition to become a future food leader. In April, Informa Markets invited the media to a tour of three manufacturers as well as the Glycemic Index Center in Chiang Mai University.

Sunsweet Public Company Limited

A taste of canned sweet corn from Sunsweet Public Company Limited, is convincing enough to know why its brand KC (King of Corn) is now known globally. The company offers frozen sweet corn cobs, cut corn, kernel corn, and corn ribs.  Sunsweet also produces and distributes other processed ready-to-eat fruit and vegetable products such as longan, pineapple, and lychee. These come in various packaging options - cans, carton packs, and retort pouches.

Below Sunsweet shares their plans and accomplishments:

Nopphada Superfoods Co., Ltd

In Thailand, Nopphada Superfoods Co., Ltd is a prominent manufacturer of black garlic based in In Lamphun. Distancing itself from the competitive raw garlic trade wars, the company discovered an innovative approach to create a nutritious product through a 30-day fermentation process that preserves its nutritional value. Among its products are garlic cider vinegar, black garlic kombucha, and plain black garlic. Products are certified to meet international standards.

Nopphada has received the Prime Minister's Award three times. It has won awards including Best Halal in 2023, and Best of Best in 2022, and Best Thai Brand and Best Export in 2021.

The company exports its products to Japan, Australia, the Middle East, and has made them available in Amazon.

Made from fermented pure lychee blossom honey, Honey Vinegar is one of the company’s popular products as it supports weight management, digestive health, and skin health as it contains anti-aging and antioxidant properties. Frequent consumption also reduces bone and joint discomfort as the product contains potassium.

Glycemic Index Center in Chiang Mai University

Ideally, the goal of the F&B industry is to produce nourishing and nutritious products for a healthier population. While sweetness is necessary in many F&B products, a trend toward less sugary formulations is gaining momentum.

The Glycemic Index Center in Chiang Mai University in Thailand is fully equipped to offer consulting and research services for reference in commercial claims, such as product testing at various levels, as well as R&D for prototype food products for nutrition.

One service is its clinical testing for health claims by in vivo method. The approach for determining GI is in line with the ISO 26642:2010 standard that specifies a method for determining the glycemic index (GI) of carbohydrates in food products. The ISO guidelines are useful especially for manufacturers of health foods and foods formulated for those with diabetes, as well as to researchers and regulators when assessing the impact of food on blood glucose levels.

Apart from these visits, Informa Markets, which supported the entire media trip, organized a Meet the Press with Mr Smith Taweelerdniti, Managing Director of Nithi Foods, and Vice President of the Thai Future Food Trade Association; Associate Professor Dr. Yuthana Phimolsiripol, Lecturer with the Department of Food Science and Technology and Dean of the Faculty of Agro-Industry at Chiang Mai University; Mr. Puripan Bunnag, Senior Vice President of the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), and Ms Rungphech Chitanuwat, Regional Portfolio Director - ASEAN, Informa Markets.

The media trip which took place from April 22–24, 2025, was held as a lead-up to the trade events Fi Asia and Vitafoods Asia 2025 to be held from September 17-19 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, Bangkok.
