COVID-19 hits the F&B industry

We’ve been monitoring how the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is impacting the food and beverage industry. Based on earlier reports, many retail companies in China are prioritizing the safety of their employees, and consumers, therefore shutting down facilities in the meantime. Starbucks has closed 2,000 outlets of its 4,300, according to a BBC report . The coffee company expects its financial performance to slide as a result of the outbreak. About 10% of its global revenue for the first quarter came from the China market. For Mondelez International, China is also an emerging market, accounting for 4.6% of sales. The company has heavily invested in product development and marketing in China, according to a CNBC report . The snacks company had to close two factories which are located near Wuhan for now. Depending on who you talk to or what you are reading about in the food industry, you will get different points of view about what’s on trend. Take the issue of meat consumption. In recent years, a lot of news have been shared about the effects of meat consumption to climate change, a few of the recent ones include an article in Nature which looks into the reasons why. The United Nations has made a call to cut meat intake not only for the obvious reason of health – but for the health of the planet. The concern was brought to light further following the deforestation – for agriculture – in the Amazon where the loss of more rainforest will eventually lead to the release of billions of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. Product inspection machines for SMEs

During a conversation with James Kearbey, president and CEO of FILTEC, we at FoodPacific Manufacturing Journal wanted to know if small and medium size companies could afford their test and inspection equipment for packaging.
