Aspartame in the news, again

It’s like waiting for a verdict that you already know will turn out anyway. And while you’re waiting, you’ve probably opened your cupboard to see what products contain the sweetener, aspartame. Reuter's exclusive report on aspartame has the F&B industry and consumers reeling these days. It said the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is set to make an announcement on the new   classification of this sugar alternative.  Will aspartame be listed under the category “Possibly Carcinogenic to Humans”? (Photo: Dreamstime.com) Aspartame, which by the way is pronounced a·spr·taym, is a low-calorie sweetener about 200 times sweeter than sugar.  And so this sugar alternative is currently found in popular diet sodas, sugar-free candy and gums, as well as Equal® and Nutrasweet® sweeteners, which are highly consumed by people in efforts to cut their intake of sugar, while also enjoying the taste of their favourite hot / cold beverages and sweet cravings.     If you take a l

i-Vision peripheral device for Dase-Sing sleeving machines

Increasingly, food and beverage producers seek consumer attention through eye-catching, unique and extraordinary packaging designs.  The shrink sleeve film is an essential tool and carrier used to achieve this goal.  But F&B manufacturers have to keep in mind that the  design of labels and bottle shapes are now also more diverse, and as such require higher standards when it comes to the capabilities of the sleeving machines.  For  DASE-SING's Auto Shrink Sleeving machine, a peripheral device called i-Vision will ensure the correct position of bottles or containers within a specific direction.  It is specially designed for variety containers in a production line, which is suitable for all kinds of shaped bottles. When a bottle shifts from its position, i-Vision will put this bottle back on track so it is transported to the next process. Steering can be done before or after filling, but in the course of operation, you can steer the bottles once again, without stopping the mec

A bite of novel foods

Novel foods comprise a strong trend nowadays. New technologies and advances in agriculture, food production and even food handling drive advances in this food category. But evolving consumer requirements are a major factor as well as these influence manufacturers’ response to such market trends and the direction of their R&D.   One such strong trend feeds the popularity of plant-based foods, supply of which has been increasing alongside people’s growing preference for more plant sources in their diet. More are turning to a flexitarian lifestyle, opting to eat less meat and more of plant-based alternative proteins, natural colouring from plants and even vegetable oils. While some allow themselves the occasional meat, they favour fish and seafood more and rely mostly on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs, dairy products herbs and spices.   Photo © Ivan Mikhaylov | Dreamstime.com Because of its higher fibre content, a plant-based diet decreases the risks of
